Social networking sites can be a lot of fun while at the same time beneficial to whatever it is you’re trying to accomplish. One of my favorite social media sites is Twitter. It’s great for promoting your sites and also for finding out what’s going on with other bloggers. Ever since I started using Twitter, I’ve lessened the time reading my feeds because most of the blogs I follow tweet their posts before the feed even reaches my reader!
You’ve probably heard of all the twitter talks going around lately and wondered what’s the big deal. Most people who haven’t tried it don’t get the deal either, so don’t worry about it. You’re not alone.
Twitter is sort of like the shortcut and combination of a blog and Facebook. It asks the question, “What are you doing?” and you can then update your ‘followers’ (those that follow your tweets) what you are doing at the moment by typing in a ‘tweet’ or message that is no longer than 140 characters. You learn to be succinct and get to the point, but that’s the beauty of Twitter. If you’re looking for prose, stick to the blogs. But if you are just looking for quick updates on what’s going on with your favorite tweeters, then this is the right media for you. Most bloggers will tweet their latest post so you know as soon as they’ve posted on their blogs. They also tweet contests and giveaways if you’re into that kind of thing. There have been times when I heard of breaking news on twitter. I’ve also gotten blogging ideas from sites shared on twitter.
Whatever it is that you are hoping to accomplish by networking with other bloggers of the same interest, you can accomplish with Twitter. Some people have gotten very cool opportunities by tweeting. But for some, tweeting a little too candidly may have caused them to lose their opportunities. Jump in, see if twittering is right for you, then decide for yourself.
